What it was built for

Writtle Minors FC is a youth football club based near Chelmsford in Essex, founded in 1969. Over five decades it has grown into one of the area’s largest grassroots clubs, fielding more than thirty teams across a wide range of age groups and holding England Football’s 3-star Accreditation, the FA’s mark of a well-run, safe and sustainable club.

The club is run entirely by volunteers. Coaches, committee members and parents keep it moving week to week, from matchday logistics and pitch maintenance to safeguarding, registration and fundraising. Everything the website does has to work for people who are giving up their evenings and weekends, not for a marketing team.

The brief

The club’s previous website had been built on an off-the-shelf website builder. It had served its purpose, but it had reached its limits.

The approach

The rebuild started with the questions people actually arrive with. Is my child old enough? Which team would they be in? Who do I contact? Where do I find the code of conduct? Where are we playing on Sunday?

From there the site was designed around a clear visual identity drawn from the club’s own colours: a deep pitch green, a brighter grass green, and a warm amber accent, set on soft chalk and mist neutrals. Typography pairs a strong display face for headings with a highly legible body face, and a monospaced face for fixtures and scores so results read cleanly at a glance.

Every element was built as part of a consistent design system rather than page by page, which keeps the site coherent as it grows and makes future sections quick to add.

What it features

Public site

  • Age group eligibility checker. Parents enter their child’s date of birth and instantly see the correct age group, including guidance on playing up where appropriate. This single tool removed one of the most common enquiries the club received
  • Team pages and contacts across every age group, with recruitment status shown so parents can see at a glance which teams are looking for players
  • Documents and safeguarding hub, bringing codes of conduct, policies, the club constitution and matchday information together as properly designed, readable pages with a download option, rather than a wall of file links
  • Matchday information with the ground address, a map, a What3Words location and a scannable code, so a visiting team can find the pitch without a phone call
  • Pitch Improvement Project page, documenting the club’s ground development work with a full photo record of progress
  • Sponsors section, giving local businesses proper visibility in return for their support
  • Contact forms routed to the right people within the club, with details pre-filled for signed-in users
  • Newsletter sign-up, with opt-in preferences stored against each member’s profile
  • Built mobile-first, for parents checking details on a phone at the side of a pitch

Member accounts

  • Secure sign-up and login, with a full password reset flow
  • Club-branded emails rather than plain system messages, so every touchpoint feels like it comes from the club

Admin area

  • Team contacts management, updating coach names and contact details per team
  • Recruitment toggles, marking a team as recruiting or full in a single click
  • Document management, uploading, replacing and organising club documents
  • Sponsor management, adding, editing and removing sponsors and their logos
  • Newsletter subscriber visibility, tied into member profiles
  • Built so committee members cannot break anything by accident

Ownership

  • All club assets migrated into storage the club controls, so photographs, documents and records belong to the club permanently rather than to a platform subscription
  • Built for speed, reliability and long-term maintainability, so the site can grow without a rebuild

The result

Writtle Minors FC now has a website that matches the standard of the club behind it: fast, clear, properly branded, and genuinely useful to the parents, players and volunteers who use it. Routine enquiries are answered by the site itself, committee members can keep information current without asking for help, and the club owns everything it has published.

Just as importantly, it is built to grow. New teams, new seasons, new sections and new features can be added without a rebuild.

Currently in development

  • Fixtures and results integration, pulling live data from the FA’s league system
  • A newsletter compose-and-send tool built into the admin area
  • Site-wide search
